How does fiberglass batts insulation work?

Fiberglass batts insulation is basically a bunch of cotton fibers, made into the size and shape of a pad, that are then sprayed with a synthetic resin to make them waterproof.

The inside air space between the fiberboard is pretty small - around 0.5 inches or 15 millimeters - which might not seem like much compared with other types of insulating materials such as Lucite that offer a 2" thickness (50 mm) but it's enough to provide significant thermal resistance from one side. The water-based polyurethane foam is applied onto both sides of the insulation boards to seal any gaps or leaks.

Fiberglass batts are an effective way to keep heat in your house once they've been installed. They are popular for people who want to insulate their homes with minimal hassle. Batts also come in rolls that can be cut into customized lengths for installation between studs, joists or rafters.

The fiberglass itself is manufactured intertwining fiberglass filaments together in order to create a fluffy fiber pile which becomes the insulation material. The resin used on fiberglass batts is more of an adhesive than anything else, so it's pretty much colorless once dry and doesn't really affect your home's aesthetics at all. Basically, what you see when you look at fiberglass batts insulation is just cotton fiber piled up in boards or rolled out like shag carpeting.

This type of insulation has become extremely popular in modern residential homes. It is cost effective, easy to install and can provide great energy savings when it comes time to sell your home.

The fiberglass batting insulation should be able to reduce any potential drafts or other infiltration if installed correctly. Fiberglass itself will not allow the wind or cold through but you should check with a contractor to ensure that there have been no gaps left at the bottom of doors etc where these forces may enter. The fiberglass batting has a high R value which means it has good insulation values, typically fiberglass batts have an R value around 3 per inch thickness meaning fiberglass batts insulation could have an R value of around 11 under ideal circumstances.
